Families & Athletes
Verify Your Would-Be Sports Agent
A simple pre-signing checklist for families and student-athletes.
Louisiana regulates athlete agents through the Representing Athletes Act (La. R.S. 51:2500 et seq.). Before a family signs any agreement, someone claiming to represent an athlete should be registered, verifiable, and willing to put every term in writing.
- Confirm the person is a registered sports agent for your state, or an attorney in good standing
- Ask who licenses or registers them and how to verify it - then verify it yourself
- Get every scope, fee, and expense term in a signed written agreement
- Do not sign under time pressure or before conflicts of interest are disclosed
- An 'education, not representation' consultant should say so in writing and never hold themselves out as an agent
- Red flags: guaranteed outcomes, cash-upfront demands, or eligibility treated as an afterthought
